Monday, September 10, 2007 5:00:00 PM
Reston, VA, September 10, 2007- John Byrd, government affairs manager for John M. Palatiello & Associates, Inc., a public affairs consulting firm based in Reston, VA, will compete in the "2007 Hoops for Hope Charity Game" tonight in the Smith Center on the campus of George Washington University.

Byrd will take the court with nine other lobbyists from the Nation's Capitol to face Congressional Staff members from a number of Representative and Committee staffs including Rep. Mike Rogers (R-MI), Rep. Buck McKeon (R-CA), Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi (D-CA), among others. The second game of the night will feature members of Congress against a second team of lobbyists.  Special guests include men's basketball coaches John Thompson III of Georgetown University and Karl Hobbs of George Washington University. Dave Johnson, voice of the Washington Wizards, will provide game commentary.

The "Hoops for Hope Charity Game" raises money for several local and national children's charities. This year's charities:

Horton's Kids - Since Horton's Kids are among D.C.'s most needy students, our comprehensive program seeks to remove any barriers that may be preventing them from succeeding. The final advisory report cards for the 2005-2006 school year showed 51% of students with a "B" average or better at the end of the year - up from 22% the year before. Hoops for Hope has made an immeasurable difference in the lives of D.C.'s neediest children. Not only do the children enthusiastically look forward to the annual game, but also, the proceeds greatly help Horton's Kids continue to offer comprehensive services to the children of Anacostia. Our partnerships with the U.S. House of Representatives and the U.S. Department of Education have enabled us to provide top-rate tutoring services to children living in one of Washington's most impoverished neighborhoods who attend the worst-performing schools in the District.

Luke Tiahrt Fund - provides outreach to kids in Kansas. This fund is named after Congress Todd Tiahrt's son, who committed suicide four years ago. The Congressman has been a long time supporter of our hoops event.

St. Anthony's Scholarship Program - provides scholarships to single parents in the community who would like to send their kids to St. Anthony's.
